NEWS PRM-TEC, Taihan’s African Subsidiary, Secures KRW 52 Billion Power Grid Project in South Africa

M-TEC has secured a power grid supply contract valued at approximately KRW 52 billion. The project, commissioned by Eskom, South African electricity public utility., involves the supply of medium- and low-voltage (MV/LV) cables and overhead lines. This initiative is part of a national infrastructure plan to stabilize the country’s power grid. Eskom has initiated a long-term strategy to replace outdated facilities and improve grid efficiency, with substantial investments planned over the next five years. M-TEC plans to actively participate in Eskom’s upcoming mid- to long-term tenders. Founded in 2000 as a joint venture by Taihan, M-TEC has successfully delivered numerous infrastructure projects across South Africa, earning recognition for its product quality and execution capabilities. In 2024, the company posted record results, with revenue reaching KRW 123.5 billion—up over 33% YoY—and operating profit more than doubling to KRW 8.8 billion. Taihan is positioning M-TEC as a strategic production base for supplying power infrastructure across Africa. The company recently completed the expansion of its MV/LV cable production facilities and quality enhancement initiatives, which began in the second half of 2023. A Taihan representative stated, “South Africa is the continent’s largest economy with highly developed financial and industrial infrastructure. As investments in power and infrastructure gain momentum, we are leveraging M-TEC’s local presence, proven track record, and strong network to become a central hub for power infrastructure across Africa.” Meanwhile, Taihan recently welcomed Ms. Sindiswa Mququ, Ambassador of South Africa to Korea, to its Dangjin Cable Plant to explore further cooperation and business expansion opportunities in the region. The company continues to enhance its global production capacity and regional presence to meet rising global electricity demand, with a particular focus on Africa and other emerging markets. ※ About M-TEC: Established in 2000 as a joint venture by Taihan, M-TEC is a South African manufacturer and supplier of various power cables. It operates a 90,000㎡ production facility consisting of five buildings and employs approximately 350 personnel.

MV/LV is a cable that is in high demand, accounting for about 90% of South Africa's underground power market. Through this investment, M-TEC plans to update MV/LV cable production facilities. Above all, M-TEC will extend the CCV (Catenary Continuous Vulcanization) line, which performs the insulation process, and reinforce the production line that specially treats the conductor surface. This investment will be completed by 2023. M-TEC expects to secure production efficiency three times or more compared to the previous production efficiency, and enhance product and price competitive edge by extending the core facilities for MV/LV cables.
