Submarine Cable Installation

Submarine Cable Installation

As global demand for submarine cables increases, the industry is experiencing a shortage of cable-laying vessels (CLVs) and rising charter rates. The possession of dedicated cable-laying vessels is increasingly seen as a critical competitive advantage in the submarine cable industry.

To establish full turn-key capability—from production and transport to installation and maintenance—Taihan acquired the cable laying vessel (CLV) PALOS in November 2023.Unlike converted barges (CLBs), PALOS was designed and built specifically for submarine cable installation and is currently the only CLV of its kind in Korea. It boasts superior functionality, capable of operating in a wide range of sea conditions regardless of depth.

Performance

· Self-Propulsion Capability: Equipped with its own power, Palos can navigate at speeds up to 9 knots, enabling installation speeds 5–6 times faster than CLBs.

· DP2 (Dynamic Positioning Class 2): Maintains precise positioning automatically, unaffected by wind or currents, allowing for stable and accurate cable laying

Features

· Flat-bottom Hull: Ensures stable operations in shallow and high-current waters like Korea’s west coast.

Hybrid Operation Modes: Can switch between DP2 and anchoring modes depending on seabed and environmental conditions.

DP2 Mode: Best for deep waters and high-precision installations.

Anchoring Mode: Suitable for calmer, shallow waters requiring economic operations.
