DC-based power grids are gaining prominence as a key technology for next-generation power infrastructure due to their advantages in energy efficiency and grid stability. Taihan has developed HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) cables across various insulation technologies and voltage classes and established an HVDC Test Center, laying the foundation to meet growing global market demand. Taihan is also advancing its LV/MV DC cable system technologies, further strengthening the competitiveness of its DC cable systems across diverse applications.
HVDC Test Center
The HVDC Test Center is one of Korea’s most advanced testing facilities for verifying the safety and reliability of HVDC cables. It is capable of simultaneously testing two circuits of land and submarine HVDC cables rated up to 640kV.
With the establishment of the HVDC Test Center, Taihan can conduct in-house not only long-term Prequalification (PQ) Tests, which take more than a year to complete, but also Temporary Overvoltage (TOV) Tests, a required test for HVDC cables under international standards. This enables Taihan to shorten product development and certification lead times, respond more rapidly to customer requirements, and enhance overall customer responsiveness.
Key Developments
Taihan has established itself as a major supplier in Korea’s HVDC market by securing the 500kV HVDC East Coast–East Seoul Project, a key national power grid project, on a turnkey basis.
Taihan is also expanding its business presence in the global HVDC market. The company has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with leading European marine infrastructure companies, including Belgium’s Jan De Nul and the Netherlands’ Boskalis, to collaborate on HVDC submarine cable projects. Taihan has also entered into an HVDC Cable System framework agreement with National Grid, a major transmission system operator in the UK, further expanding its global business opportunities.
