Demand for power grid replacement is rapidly increasing in major developed markets, including the United States and Europe, as much of the installed underground cable infrastructure has exceeded its service life. Taihan is strengthening its business competitiveness by undertaking a wide range of aging power grid replacement projects in Korea and overseas, leveraging specialized technologies including Triplex cables and the Traverse Guide Puller. In particular, Taihan’s proprietary Traverse Guide Puller enhances installation efficiency while minimizing traffic disruption, enabling reliable cable installation even in densely populated urban areas. The technology has been successfully applied to aging power grid replacement projects in Korea and the United States, demonstrating its installation performance and technological capabilities.
Traverse Guide Puller
The Traverse Guide Puller is an innovative installation solution comprising specialized equipment and an installation method designed to freely change the cable pay-off direction during extra-high-voltage (EHV) cable installation. Developed independently by Taihan through in-house R&D, the technology has been patented in Korea, the United States, and Australia.
The technology is optimized for urban environments with heavy traffic and high pedestrian volumes. Installation can be carried out while occupying only two traffic lanes, without the need for additional equipment such as cranes or scaffolding, significantly reducing public inconvenience and construction time. In comparison, conventional installation methods require the occupation of three or more traffic lanes as well as additional equipment.
Key Developments
Leveraging its differentiated technologies and extensive project experience, Taihan is expanding its market presence by undertaking large-scale aging power grid replacement projects in major markets, including Korea and the United States.
Taihan has also jointly developed new trenchless repair equipment and materials for underground transmission and distribution conduits with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), while securing technologies optimized for aging power grid replacement, including Triplex cables. Taihan’s Triplex cable has a smaller outer diameter than the combined outer diameter of three conventional XLPE cables, allowing it to be installed in existing narrow conduits and manholes. It also provides more than 20% higher transmission capacity than oil-filled (OF) cables of the same conductor size.
