Taihan Secures Domestic 500kV HVDC Project, Accelerating Expansion in the HVDC Market

- A key national power grid project transmitting electricity to the Seoul metropolitan area

- Domestic HVDC Contract Secured, Demonstrating Technology and Execution Capabilities

- Expanding Participation in Major HVDC Projects in Korea and Overseas

Taihan has reinforced its competitiveness in the HVDC market by securing a key national power transmission project.

On June 17, Taihan announced through a regulatory filing that it had been awarded the EP2 package of the 500kV HVDC East Coast–DongSeoul Transmission Project by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The contract is valued at KRW 146.3 billion, and Taihan will undertake the project on a turnkey basis, covering the manufacturing and supply of 500kV HVDC XLPE cables and related accessories, as well as installation.

The East Coast–DongSeoul HVDC project is a critical national transmission infrastructure initiative designed to ensure the stable delivery of electricity generated from nuclear, thermal, and large-scale renewable energy sources in Korea’s eastern coastal region to the Seoul metropolitan area.

Taihan has developed and commercialized Korea’s first 500kV HVAC (High Voltage Alternating Current) cable system and has supplied the technology to overseas markets, including North America. Building on this expertise, the company successfully developed Korea’s first 500kV current-source HVDC cable system and a 525kV voltage-source HVDC cable system (3,000㎟, operating above 90°C), expanding its technological capabilities into the ultra-high-voltage direct current transmission sector. These systems have all been designated as National Core Technologies by the Korean government, and Taihan continues to strengthen its capabilities to support the stable development of the national power grid.

Leveraging its technological expertise, Taihan has also expanded its presence in the global market. In the United States, the company secured a 320kV-class HVDC power grid project, strengthening its foothold in North America. In Europe, it signed an HVDC cable system framework agreement with National Grid, the United Kingdom’s electricity transmission operator, establishing a foundation for further market expansion.

More recently, at the Korea-EU Energy Transition Partnership Forum, Taihan signed separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with leading marine infrastructure companies Jan De Nul and Boskalis to cooperate on HVDC submarine cable projects, further enhancing its capabilities to execute large-scale global projects.

“This contract award reflects the results of our long-term efforts to develop HVDC technologies and strengthen both manufacturing and installation capabilities,” said a Taihan official. “Building on our experience in domestic HVDC projects, we will further enhance our competitiveness in future national grid initiatives, including the West Coast Energy Highway project, as well as in the global power transmission market. We remain committed to contributing to stable power infrastructure development and the global energy transition.”
